The Treaty of Tripoli (1797), signed by John Adams and ratified by the Senate, states explicitly that 'the Government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.' The First Amendment forbids establishment of religion. Personal faith of some founders doesn't override constitutional secular government.
